A HVAC system is great, but only if it works efficiently. Repairing an HVAC unit is expensive and it can take a while before your home is once again a comfortable environment. Therefore, it is important to know how to maintain your system, and what to do if you need to replace or repair it.

Know what work you want done before you select an HVAC contractor. This will make the quote process much easier. It can be harder if you don't know what's wrong. So, figure out this information before anything else.

Make sure your condenser fan is in good working order by wiping down the fan blades and the coils. First, make sure the power is off to ensure nothing moves while you are working. Remove the grill and carefully clean the blades and surrounding areas.

TIP! If your HVAC is giving you problems, tour your home before calling a technician. Figure out which rooms are too cool or warm.

Your outdoor HVAC units might suffer when your trees lose leaves. Clean outdoor units often to remove leaves. An obstruction, such as a leaf, prevents the maximum amount of cool air from entering the system.

Lubricate your fan condenser if it has oil ports. The port usually has either a rubber or metal cap on top of it. Pick a type of SAE 20 oil that is non-detergent and lightweight. Place 10 or less drops into every port to avoid overfilling.

Put outdoor condensers in the shade. The unit will have to do less work cooling this air.

TIP! Clean the condenser on your debris regularly. After a wind or rain storm things may pile up, causing problems with your system.

Turn off any outdoor condensers you have when the weather gets cold. If it's less than 60 degrees outside, turn the unit off. Your system will work longer for you this way.
