Many people would like to know about their HVAC unit, but they believe it is difficult. This does not have to happen though. Use the information and advice offered in the tips below so that you can take your HVAC maintenance into your own hands.
When you start making calls to get someone to help with your HVAC system, it's a good idea to know what system you have before that phone call. Learn the brand and the model. This will facilitate the process when your contractor asks for this information.
Make sure that you regularly clean debris that might build up on external condenser units. Debris can pile up at rates that increase during rainy or windy weather, and this can foul up the inner workings of your system. Overheating may be the result if you don't.
As you notice the tress begin to lose their leaves, keep an eye on your outdoor condenser unit. During this time of year, check and clear off the fan grill on your unit on a regular basis. The fan needs to have an unobstructed path for air to enter the unit, and if it becomes blocked, you will end up with many headaches with the unit.
Lubricate your fan condenser at least once a year. These are usually covered with rubber or metal caps. Put 10 drops of lightweight, non-detergent SAE oil in each port. Be careful not to use too much.
Your system should be checked twice a year. The ideal thing to do would be to have it checked out in the fall and spring so you're able to figure out if everything is ready for the cold and hot months. Whether you know of problems or not, good maintenance will help you to avoid future issues.
Pane Windows
If you are a home owner, replace whatever single pane windows you have with more efficient double-paned versions. Double-pane windows keep inside air cooler, allowing you to reduce AC usage in the summertime. This will also help you keep in heat when it gets cold.
A programmable thermostat can help you save money on your air conditioning bill. If you adjust it to keep the house a little warmer or a little cooler during the time you are sleeping, you may see your energy bill go down by as much as ten percent. Also, you'll find that you can program your thermostat from a computer or anything connected to the web.
Keep energy costs from rising by having your system serviced annually. The motor should be checked, the parts oiled and the freon levels inspected. This will keep you energy efficient and comfortable.
Never allow your home to get dangerously hot inside. Air conditioners can only really cool your home down 20 degrees or so within a reasonable time period. This means that if the weather is above 100 degrees, then you'll still be baking in 80 degree weather at first! With high humidity, this is an unsafe temperature even for sleeping.
HVAC maintenance isn't terribly difficult, especially if you have some helpful advice like that found in the tips above. You won't be able to learn how to deal with this type of stuff without learning these tips, so keep these things in mind. Keep them handy for whenever you need them.
