Having a properly running HVAC system is excellent; a bad one is a real pain. The repairs are costly, and you also have to live in a situation that is not pleasant due to uncomfortable temperatures. Follow these helpful tips on dealing with your HVAC system.
Prior to putting in a service call on your HVAC, be able to identify it. Look for the maintenance history and brand and model. This will help make sure that the contractor you hire has all the necessary information.
Clean the fan blades and coils prior to summertime. If you are doing more than a light surface cleaning, make sure that the power is shut off to the HVAC unit. In addition, be sure to get rid of any leaves or other debris that may have accumulated on the outside condenser.
Be sure to regularly clean debris from external condenser units. Leaves and debris can accumulate quickly, particularly following storms, and that can cause problems for your system. Overheating could occur, which will be problematic.
Clean the fan blades and coils on the condenser fan every spring. First, make sure the power is off to ensure nothing moves while you are working. Then remove the grill, remove the blades and clean it from top to bottom gently.
When you mow your lawn, take care that you don't get grass clippings all over your outdoor unit. Try shooting the clippings away from it. Be just as mindful when you blow leaves to not blow them toward your HVAC equipment.
Lubricate your fan condenser if it has oil ports. These ports are often covered by a rubber or metal cap. Use SAE 20 oil that is lightweight and detergent free, and put ten drops or fewer into each one. Make sure not to overfill them.
In order to boost efficiency, place new outdoor units or move your current unit to a place which resides in the shade. When the air conditioner pulls in cooler air, it won't have to do much more to cool it and that will save you a lot of money on energy bills.
To save money and be more comfortable in your home, install double-paned windows instead of single pane. During the summer, the use of double-pane windows will help keep the cool air locked inside of the home. They help in the winter, too, keeping the heat in.
